It does not need to come to this.

Alright ladies, lets get serious (this is for mothers of the bride or groom and bridesmaids too!). You want to look good in that gown, which means you want to accentuate the fabulous, and smooth out anything that may be not-so-fabulous. If you are the bride, your wedding gown is probably the most expensive piece of clothing you have ever purchased, so remember to include the cost of some body shapers in your dress budget. Not only will they help your posture and make you feel confident, proper undergarments will help take you from looking good to super fabulous in your gown.

Here is a lineup of my favorite bridal undergarments.

Top Five Bridal Undergarments

Spanx

The designers at Spanx have a whole page dedicated to bridal undergarment assistance.
This is one of the tried and true: the Hi Rise Body Smoother.

NatoriNordstrom

Perfect for strapless gowns, the Natori Convertible Underwire Bra from
Nordstrom
will keep you comfortable through the day.

norstome

This dress tape will hold your gown in place where you want it. Be the superstar bridesmaid
and have it on hand just in case. Trust me on this one.

thighigh

Go vintage with these sensual lace-trimmed thigh highs with visible back seams
from Nordstrom. A comfortable and affordable alternative to traditional stockings.

LeMystere

For added tummy control, consider the bustier. This one from Le Mystère
has removable shoulder straps. Removable garter included also--ooh la la!

Undergarment Tips

  • Talk to your alterations expert. He or she may be able to sew bust, ahem, enhancements into the dress. They may also suggest a particular undergarment, so do not be bashful. This is what they do for a living.
  • When selecting colors, try to pick an undergarment that is closest to your natural skin color. This will prevent seeing through the dress to the undergarment.
  • At some point during the wedding day, you will need to use the ladies room. As you try on undergarments, think of the ease (or lack thereof) to remove the undergarment. Some undergarments have gussets for this purpose.
  • You want to be able to breath on your wedding day; do not purchase anything too tight.

  1. Elizabeth, thank you so much for this honest and amusing post. My wedding is in 3 months, and your post came at the perfect time. I had just purchased a body shaper, but I wasn't fully satisfied with it. After reading your post, I rushed out and bought the Hi Rise Body Shaper from Spanx, and I now feel so much better. I would definitely recommend it to all of your readers. Thanks for the great suggestion! I love all your ideas!
