Ask and you shall receive. Kim and Phil contacted me for a meeting; they are new to the area (transplants from LA, no less!) and have opened their own wedding and portrait photography company, appropriately named Kim + Phil Photography. Their website inspired confidence, and I was looking to profile a photographer in a new price range, so I decided to blog about the couple. Kim and Phil are super friendly and their ultimate goal is to make their clients happy. From the minute I met them, I could tell they loved what they do.
Kim and Phil have an incredible wedding photography deal: seven hours of coverage with the two of them on your wedding day for $1500 (details here). I encourage those couples on tight budgets to check these two out--you will not be disappointed.

How did you start your photography business?
Both of us shot photos on our own, before we met. We both like photography, so it was natural when we decided to open a business together.
Tell me how you came to Portland.
We grew up in the Los Angeles area, but were ready for a change of scenery. We moved up in July of 2009. We packed most of our things in our little Volkswagen Golf, and had the rest of our big stuff moved in a POD.

Why wedding photography?
The creative freedom of weddings was what drew us to wedding photography. People hire us, and trust us to be thoughtful and inventive with our photos. Taking pictures of people is the best--capturing those intimate, happy moments is what make us tick.
What did you do in your previous life before becoming a wedding photographer?
Kim: I was a Marriage and Family Counselor.
Phil: I was a Missionary in Mexico.

What is the Kim + Phil difference?
We offer a unique style in our editing. Our photos are soft, clean, and bright, yet simple and honest too. We like to capture people as they are, not set them up in a particular way. We try to reach for a vintage flair in all our pictures, while capturing the emotion of the moment.
Having pictures which are technically sounds is important too. Our professional training helps us immensely as we take not only "good" pictures, but ones that have good lighting, composition, and attention to detail.
When not out shooting, we are always looking at photographs and discussing photography. It is difficult for us to stop talking about photography, actually!

How do you like working together?
It is fun, we like spending time together. When we shot our first wedding, we were expecting some tension, as could be expected. But we worked together very naturally, and we had an absolutely fabulous time! We consider it an honor to be able to capture images of one of the biggest days in a couple's lives: their wedding day.

What other types of photos do you shoot besides weddings?
We enjoy doing senior portraits, those have been really fun. The teens are so clever in selecting great locations, they have helped us explore many wonderful Portland areas for photography.
Our boudoir photography has been growing as well, especially as a surprise for Valentine's Day. We can shoot boudoir photos in our home studio or a hotel room. We have done some boudoir in the client's home, which is excellent--the client is familiar with the setting and more often comfortable in their own home. But we are very flexible.

Don't Be a Stranger
Stay tuned, Kim + Phil are offering a great surprise to one lucky couple! It will be up shortly.
