How did Face Body Beauty begin?
When I was working toward my Bachelor's Degree at Northern Arizona University, I started doing makeup for many of the women in the sororities, for date nights and formal events. I really enjoyed it. Upon graduation, I returned to Oregon and got my Esthetician licence. I opened Face Body Beauty in 2005, and now have a team of four I work with. We have a great time with the brides and their bridesmaids.
Why bridal hair and makeup?
I do some fashion makeup and hair as well, but most of my work is with brides. From the start I was drawn to bridal makeup. I love to see the transformation of everyday women for their wedding day. Brides are also very fun to work with--there is so much excitement and joy in planning a wedding, it is fun for me to be a part of that excitement.
Tell me about the team at Face Body Beauty.
I work with an incredible team. I have four other professionals I work with. For large bridal parties, we can work efficiently and make everyone look great without spending several hours. This gives couples more time for pictures-taking and starting the festivities of the wedding day.
Our team holds monthly workshops where we try new things with hair and make-up. This ensures that we are all current on the trends, and also that our work is consistent as a whole.

Why do you feel women should have their hair and makeup done for their wedding, versus doing it themselves?
The three most common complaints I hear from former brides are: 1) I should have hired a better photographer, 2) I should have hired a wedding coordinator, and 3) I should have had someone do my makeup and hair.
When you look back at your wedding photographs, the first thing you are going to look at is your face. A professional makeup artist knows how to use the right colors for your skin, the different types of makeup which will look best on you. In Portland, we have all different types of weather, and I can determine how to make you photograph fabulously no matter the types of clouds in the sky. There is a big difference between everyday makeup and make-up for photography, and a professional can help you look your best.

What are the bridal hair and make-up trends for 2010?
With hair, we are going to see softer curls, looser styles of up-dos and buns. Messier styles are also in.
For make-up, most brides still want to go for a natural look, but each person's definition of natural is different, which keeps it interesting for me. I think a make-up trend will be smokey eyes, with purple and gray hues. I am also seeing a few retro looks for this year, with dramatic wing-like eye liner.

If you had to close tomorrow, what type of work would you do?
I am very entrepreneurial--I was influenced by my father who has owned his own business for more than 30 years.
My other hobbies are cooking and reading, so I would probably open a book store with a coffee shop inside.

Take away beauty tip for makeup and hair?
Makeup: Use the tight line method of lining underneath your lashes. And never leave the house without blusher or bronzer. These will really help the dimensionality of your face.
Hair: if you are having a bad hair day, remember that right now messy is in. Do not fret, just backcomb it a little and secure it with bobby pins. Voilà, you are stylish!
