calendar.jpgThe excitement has begun!  The love of your life has proposed and you’re about to embark on a tremendous journey together.  You’ve likely informed your family and friends, and now people are starting to ask the number two question after inquiring about the proposal.

Have you set a date?

ring.jpgDate or no date set, the tasks involved with planning your nuptials can quickly become overwhelming.  You’ve got to find the perfect dress, find a caterer, a ceremony location, select your wedding party, pick your colors, and decide between a band or a DJ.  Plus, every bride I’ve ever met wants to loose 20 lbs as well!

It really can get quite stressful, quickly.  At one point, many couples consider the nuclear option: eloping.

Before you hit the road to Vegas, take a few deep breathes and look to this list for some guidelines.

Your Wedding Vision

Think of what your dream wedding would be, letting your creative juices flow.  Purchase a few wedding magazines or check out some wedding books from the library.  Let your intuition be your guide.  There are lots of ways to put on a wedding—be sure to think of the type of wedding you truly want.

Announce Your Engagement

Sharing the great news beyond your immediate family and friends is perfectly acceptable.  Consider sending engagement announcements to the local newspaper or your alumni magazine.  You can also make free, personalized wedding websites to share the great news.

Finding the Gown

It’s never too early to start looking at gorgeous gowns for the big day.  Styles come and go, so it’s good to start early and get some ideas of what you like.  You’ll want to consider the color, cut, and fabric types which are the most flattering.  Looking at bridal gowns can be an exhilarating experience in which many family and friends may join you.  In Southern California there are so many wonderful stores. This is your time to try them all!

Set Your Budget

The earlier you set the budget, the happier you will be.  The budget will help determine the formality, date, and location you’ll ultimately select.  Don’t fret because you don’t think you’ll have enough—these days much can be within all types of budgets.

Select Attendants

Use caution on this one.  If you are having attendants who will travel afar, it is best to give them as much advance notice as you can so that they may secure a flight and hotel at a reasonable rate.  Consider, however, that out of town bridesmaids may not be able to help you very much with the planning, gown selection, wedding shower(s), or bachelorette party.  It may sound cold-hearted to think of it this way, but most brides need and want help with events surrounding their weddings.
