Boudoir photography is a hot trend for brides right now (no pun intended). In a boudoir photo shoot, a photographer takes playful, sensual, and romantic photos of you. Some photographers put the best of the best pictures in a book for you, others return all the proofs to you so you can compose a book of your own or frame your favorites.
These types of photographs make an excellent wedding day gift to your groom. I had boudoir photographs done for our wedding, and my husband LOVED them. Moreover, I enjoyed doing them and the experience was an eye-opener for seeing myself in way I never had before.
Every day we demand so much from our bodies. Doing a boudoir shoot helped me to see myself in a different light—one of sensuality, thoughtfulness, and intrigue. It really helped me to appreciate my body and reminded me how beautiful I am. The experience didn’t just produce sexy photos, it captured pictures of who I am as a woman. Bottom line: do it for him and do it for yourself.
In the Los Angeles area, I would recommend the wonderful and talented services of Danielle Biel of Skye Blu Photography or Jordana Hazel of Hazelnut Photography. Both have an excellent eye for this type of photography and get great shots. Also, Danielle and Jordana are super-friendly and professional.
Do some research and take the plunge, I promise you will not regret it.
Common Concerns of Those Considering Boudoir Photos
I’m Not a Size Six. Will I Still Look Good?
Absolutely. Photographers work with all types of people, with all different body shapes. The beauty of this type of photography is that it captures the essence and beauty of each of us, no matter the size and shape. Often, the photographer will ask you which body parts you really like and want her to focus on, as well as those you’d like to cover.
What Should I Wear? How Many “Outfits” do I Need?
Some people bring a suitcase full of items. I’d recommend sticking to 4-6 things you think you look great in. Here are some ideas:
- Your fiancés dress shirt, and bring his favorite tie in too.
- You or your fiancés favorite sports jersey
- Black fishnet look (think black heals, fishnet stockings, garter, black bra)
- Soft, loose nightgown
- Your favorite lacy panties in any color
I’m Really Nervous! How Do I Tame My Nerves?
This is completely understandable. It’s not every day you get almost completely naked in front of a stranger! But, seriously, try to relax. Remember, the photographer is a woman too, and they’ve seen all types of bodies.
To calm your nerves, bring an iPod loaded with your favorite songs and a bottle of wine. Lots of ladies throw back a glass (or two) before getting started. Feel free to bring a friend for support if you like.
Where Will the Photographer Take the Pictures?
Some photographers have their own studios for boudoir photography. Others have you rent a room in a gorgeous hotel. Still others will go farther. Jordana Hazel takes boudoir photographs on the beach and in the woods, wherever the client wants!
What is the Cost?
Like most things, cost will vary widely. Expect to pay anywhere between $250 to $1,000. Prepare for about 3-4 hours of preparation and shoot time, then a few weeks for processing the photos.
What About Hair and Make-up?
Some photographers include hair and make-up in their price (which could lower the cost overall, rather than hiring out several people). Other photographers have you select your own hair and make-up people. Ask them for suggestions, they likely know the pros.
I would not recommend doing it yourself unless you are a real expert at hair and make-up. You’ll look better and feel more confident in the hands of professional. The professionals know you’re likely going for a dramatic and sultry look in boudoir photographs. They’ll do a great job without making you look too tartish. ;-)
